Cataract surgery is a highly effective procedure to restore vision that has become blurred or clouded by cataract formation. At Wight Eye Surgery, private cataract surgery is delivered locally on the Isle of Wight by an experienced consultant ophthalmic surgeon, ensuring continuity of care from consultation through to surgery and follow-up.
A cataract occurs when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to reduced vision, glare, and difficulty with daily activities such as reading or driving. Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear artificial intraocular lens. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic and typically takes 15 to 20 minutes.
We believe that the best surgical outcomes are achieved by taking a patient-centred approach to every procedure, working closely with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your unique needs and goals. Sedation is available for patients experiencing any significant anxiety about eye surgery.
At Wight Eye Surgery, we offer comprehensive surgical care, from pre-operative consultations to post-operative follow-up appointments. Following an initial consultation, surgery is usually scheduled promptly. Most patients experience rapid visual improvement, with recovery continuing over the following weeks.
Our state-of-the-art surgical facility is equipped with the latest in technology allowing us to provide the most up-to-date surgical care possible, with minimal discomfort and more predictable outcomes. Our practice is conveniently located at St Mary's Hospital, Isle of Wight. Clinics are situated in the main Eye Department and all surgery is conducted in the newly constructed Eye Care Centre.
Some cataracts are more complex requiring additional surgical expertise. Advanced or complex cataract surgery may be needed in eyes with previous eye surgery, retinal disease, glaucoma, significant short- or long-sightedness, small pupils, or other structural eye conditions.
Mr Lochhead has extensive experience managing complex cataract cases and regularly performs surgery in eyes that carry a higher surgical risk. His background in retinal surgery and vitrectomy provides additional expertise when operating in such cases.
